Our Study Buddy program provides essential homework assistance in order to increase homework completion and decrease nightly family frustrations that result from trying to meet the challenges of common-core related assignments. These challenges can be especially pronounced for the low-income students we serve, where opportunity gaps -- limited access to sports, summer camp and travel -- contribute to achievement gaps that are difficult to repair (The Opportunity Gap: Extracurriculars and Field Trips Aren’t Just for Fun, Jessica Poiner, 2015).

The tutoring service is provided by high school students, and any student in need of assistance (homework, project completion, tutoring, enrichment) is welcome to attend. The intergenerational relationship is beneficial for both the tutor and the tutee because it provides a forum for them to communicate in a common language that makes them feel comfortable. It also removes feelings of stress associated with being in school, which can negatively impact student performance. A certified teacher is available for any student that may need more intense individualized assistance.

In addition to homework help, program participants receive a snack and a dinner. Attendees set the table in preparation for the dinner and practice table manners, and during dinner they take turns discussing their school day and any challenges that they may have had. All present share praise or feedback as to how they could address the challenge. After dinner they have the option to participate in the YOTM sports program.

The program has approximately 20 students at any given time, who come from public, charter, and parochial schools throughout the community as well as neighboring communities. Students are asked to provide a small monetary donation.
